How do you calculate your one rep max without testing it?

Take a set you pushed close to failure, enter the weight and the reps, and a formula estimates the heaviest single you could lift. Epley multiplies the weight by one plus the reps divided by 30, so 185 lb for 5 reps works out to about 216 lb. A hard set of three to six reps gives the closest estimate, which is why the calculator stops at 10.

What is a one rep max?

Your one rep max, or 1RM, is the heaviest weight you can lift for one complete repetition with good form. It is the standard measure of strength on a lift, and most strength programs set their working weights as percentages of it, such as five sets of five at 75 percent. A max belongs to one lift: your bench press max says nothing about your squat.

What is the one rep max formula, and is Epley or Brzycki better?

Epley is weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30). Brzycki is weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps). Neither is better for everyone. They give the same answer at exactly 10 reps, and below that Brzycki reads a few percent lower: 225 lb for 5 is 263 by Epley and 253 by Brzycki. Pick one and keep using it, because a consistent estimate tracks progress better than a slightly closer one.

Is the estimate different for bench press, squat and deadlift?

The formulas are the same for every lift, so the number does not change when you pick a different one; the lift only labels your result. Studies have found the same formula can be closer on some lifts than on others, and every formula gets less accurate as the reps climb. Whatever the lift, a heavy set of three to five reps gives a better estimate than a set of ten.

How do you test your one rep max safely?

Warm up with the bar and a few heavier sets of fewer reps, then take singles with three to five minutes of rest, making the jumps smaller as the bar slows. Stop at the last rep you made with good form, not the last one you survived, and use a spotter or safety arms on bench and squat. What percentage of your one rep max should you lift?

It depends on the goal. Strength work sits at 85 percent or more for six reps or fewer; muscle-building work at roughly 65 to 85 percent for six to twelve; technique and speed work at 50 to 70 percent. The chart shows each percentage as a weight you can load: 50 percent of a 262.5 lb max is 131.25, which no pair of plates makes, so the row reads 130 and shows the plates.

Are one rep max calculators accurate?

Usually to within a few percent, when the set was hard and the reps were low. Accuracy falls as the reps go up, and it varies from person to person: a lifter with a lot of muscular endurance gets more reps at any percentage, so their estimate runs higher than what they can actually lift. Treat the number as a planning figure for your training percentages, not a promise.

Does training at your one rep max build muscle?

Not much on its own. Singles near your max build strength and the skill of lifting heavy, but one rep is very little total work. Muscle comes mostly from volume: sets of six to twelve reps at roughly 65 to 85 percent, taken close to failure. That is why programs estimate or test a max and then spend most sessions well below it.
